Launching the Complete Streets MKE Campaign
NWSCDC is a coalition partner with groups around the City of Milwaukee working to engage with residents and talk about how we can make our streets safer. Traffic safety is a huge concern. We hear it from neighbors, we see it in the news. Reckless driving makes some streets feel unsafe. The most vulnerable people in our communities, youth and elders, may be most at risk. No one should feel unsafe when they need to get to work or school, do their shopping, or catch a bus to an appointment. Whether we walk, take the bus, ride a bike, or drive, we all use the transportation infrastructure just about every day. What can we do about this? Better driving behavior is essential. Police enforcement for traffic laws is part of the equation. But what if we could re-engineer our streets to prioritize safety? We will discuss how streets can be designed for better safety, especially for people walking, taking transit, biking and driving too.
NWSCDC has been talking with residents and organizing on this issue for some time. In 2017 we hosted a community bike ride and led picketing on Capitol Drive against reckless driving. Now with coalition partners we're expanding the conversation to talk about more long-term improvements in our transportation system. We envision a City where people have access to good jobs, good schools, shops and recreation with safe and healthy transportation options. Over the next few months we'll be talking with our neighbors and decision-makers about how we can achieve this vision.Want to get involved right away?
