West Basin Stormwater Project
Protecting our Communities.
As part of the 30th Street Corridor Flood Management Project, the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) is constructing a series of stormwater detention basins to help protect against large floods like those that happened in 2008 & 2010 and to reduce basement backups.
Two of these, the North Basin (3001 W. Congress Street) and the East Basin (4234 N. 30th Street) have been completed and are functioning as designed. The West Basin will be the largest of the three basins and will be constructed at the former Bee Bus Line site on N. 35th Street to capture stormwater during heavy rains.
The West Basin project will incorporate new green space for community use at the northern end of the site near 35th Street & Congress Street. The current design features several new amenities that residents and stakeholders have suggested, including a playground, pavilion, sledding hill, trails/paths, sport courts, public art, amphitheater, plaza, and a variety of native plants & trees. The project will further include heavy construction on a portion of N. 35th Street, which presents an opportunity for street safety improvements.
Contracted by MMSD to lead community engagement efforts, NWSCDC has been working to engage area residents, businesses, schools, daycares, and other stakeholders on what is happening with this project since 2018. We look forward to continuing our support of this catalytic investment in our neighborhood!
We value your input.
We want YOU to give us your ideas for how this community space should be designed and programmed so it is a safe, welcoming place for residents to enjoy. Share your feedback today!

NWSCDC has been hosting free community events at the West Basin to engage families throughout the design process. The 2023 season included seasonal festivals, clean-ups, skate night, a pop-up farmers market, and a fall pumpkin giveaway (shown to the left) as ways to collect input on the project from residents!
