The Cisterns are Coming, and We're Ready!

On Saturday, September 15 an amazing group of volunteers helped assemble a big new stormwater cistern at Alice's Garden.  Andrew Haug from NWSCDC was one of the volunteers who showed up that day.  See an excellent write-up from the Alice's Garden event and great photos in the Milwaukee Independent here: http://www.milwaukeeindependent.com/photos/blox-party-alices-garden-builds-vital-cistern-stormwater-diversion/NWSCDC will soon be installing a similar stormwater cistern at our Green Tech Station site.  In fact, our contractors have just begin prepping the site today!  We are excited to bring a new green space in a spot that was formerly a blighted, contaminated site.  Our new cistern here, just like the one at Alice's Garden, will hold 20,000 gallons of runoff in a big rain event.  That's about the volume of 363 rain barrels (the 55 gallon type)!  Our volunteer "Blox Party" for cistern assembly will be October 6.But there is another cool link between our water retention projects.  The extra soil excavated from Alice's Garden in the cistern location has been moved to our Green Tech Station site.  Their project had a need to relocate this soil, and our project had a need for additional topsoil for our brownfield cap.We thank the whole community at Alice's Garden, and we're honored to share your extra soil!See our October 6 event invite here, and please RSVP soon by email to wilniesha.smith@refloh2o.com so we can make sure to order lunch for you!
