2021 Youth Internship: Decorative Crosswalk & Safe Routes for Teens
Internship Description:
Apply online HERE to be a Project Manager for NWSCDC and the WI Bike Fed's collaborative program to install a decorative crosswalk, learn bike skills, and participate in a community-oriented bike ride on Milwaukee's North Side. The internship will be held from June - September 2021.
Applications are due no later than May 22, 2021.
Required Qualifications:
● Interns need to be currently enrolled in high school (grades 9-12) in Milwaukee, WI.
● Interns should have strong leadership, organization, problem-solving skills, and good attention to detail.
● Interns will work in a team of two and need to work fairly independently to meet program goals and stay on schedule.
● Interns should have an interest in at least one of the following: safe streets, bicycling, walking, art, urban design, city planning, and/or community development.
● Interns will need to be willing to participate in bicycle rides and trainings/lessons, though access to a bicycle is not a requirement.
● Interns will need to attend one meeting of the Coalition for Safe Driving to present their progress with the internship to community stakeholders.
Time Commitment, Compensation & Location:
● Interns should expect to work approximately 8 hours per week throughout the summer and will be supported by staff at NWSCDC and the WI Bike Fed.
● Each intern will be paid a stipend of $750, separated into 3 payments of $250 throughout the summer. Interns must provide a signed W-9 form in order to receive payments. Note that interns will not earn an hourly wage - the stipend is a fixed amount.
● Each intern will also receive a FREE bicycle, helmet, gear bag, lock, t-shirt, and PPE for their participation.
● Interns will report to the NWSCDC office (4201 N. 27th Street, 7th Floor) unless another meeting location is designated.
● Ideally, interns will have access to their own laptop or tablet to use during the decorative crosswalk portion of the project, though it is not a requirement. If a laptop is needed, NWSCDC will provide one but it must remain at the NWSCDC work site.
Decorative Crosswalk Component:
● Work with NWSCDC staff to identify an intersection for a decorative crosswalk installation on Milwaukee’s North Side.
● Plan & conduct community engagement to involve residents and stakeholders in designing the crosswalk
This could include a combination of the following:
Door knocking & flyering blocks nearby
Connecting one-on-one with stakeholders, i.e. schools, churches, etc.
Hosting a community input session to collect ideas
● Narrow down (based on community input) a design and color scheme for the crosswalk.
● Determine what kinds of materials are needed to install the crosswalk.
● Prepare for, plan & host a workshop day for volunteers to help stencil and paint the crosswalk.
● Plan & host an event to reveal the crosswalk once completed
This could a combination of the following:
Neighborhood walk
Block party/cookout
Safe streets demonstration/rally
Ribbon cutting ceremony
● Report on progress and challenges to NWSCDC, WI Bike Fed, and the Coalition for Safe Driving MKE throughout the summer.
Safe Routes for Teens Component:
● Participate in basic bicycle training/handling skill lessons and ride around the City approximately once per week starting in July, facilitated by the WI Bike Fed.
● Apply learned bicycle safety skills to support the Promise Zone Bike Ride in September 2021, a community-oriented ride typically starting and ending in the Garden Homes neighborhood.
● Assist with outreach.
