NWSCDC & M-WERC Improving Local Opportunities
Midwest Energy Research Consortium (M-WERC) and the NWSCDC are working together to create more opportunities for Milwaukee's Northwest side. M-WERC is receiving a loan from NWSCDC's Business Lending Program to use as working capital to support development of the Energy Innovation Center (EIC).NWSCDC is a supporter of M-WERC through in-kind contributions and regularly participates in outreach and marketing activities for the EIC. M-WERC is relying on the NWSCDC to help attract businesses to the EIC by addressing safety and quality of life issues in the surrounding neighborhoods; connecting the local workforce to the jobs that will be created in the EIC and in the Century City business parks; providing loans to support the growth of EIC businesses; bringing a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) high school to an adjacent parcel that will provide job training programs and establish a pipeline of qualified workers; and providing quality affordable housing opportunities that will improve the standard of living for all residents and create walk-to-work opportunities for new employees.M-WERC and the EIC are critical partners for the NWSCDC. The success of NWSCDC’s programmatic initiatives requires that Century City Tower serve as a symbol and promise for the future of the 30th Street Industrial Corridor, bringing new resources to an under-invested area of the city. An influx of new businesses will bring new jobs, new residents, and ancillary commercial services to the CDC’s target area, and help to retain those residents who have already invested their lives and livelihoods in the fate of the surrounding neighborhoods.
